Is Rhinoplasty Permanent?

Yes, rhinoplasty results are considered permanent. If you had a botched nose job, it can be corrected with a follow-up procedure. However, if you take the time to find a skilled surgeon, you don’t have to worry about your results fading over time. You won’t need a maintenance procedure 10 or 15 years later.

Note, there are exceptions to every rule. You may need another nose job in the future if you break your nose. Also, the appearance of your nose may change in the future due to the natural effects of the aging process.

Will My Nose Be Broken During the Procedure?

It is very rare for the nose to be broken during a nose job. However, the only way to tell whether your nose would be broken during the procedure is to come in for an evaluation to assess your concerns and discuss your goals. Rest assured, if we need to break your nose to give you the results you want, you will not feel any pain or discomfort. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia and sedation.

Am I a Good Candidate for This Procedure?

To find out whether you are a good rhinoplasty candidate, you need to come in for an initial evaluation. We’ll evaluate your cosmetic or medical concerns and talk about what you’d like to achieve. Then, we’ll discuss your health to make sure that you are healthy enough to undergo this procedure. All of this information will help us determine whether sedation and local anesthesia or general anesthesia would be better for you.

How Should I Prepare for This Procedure?

In preparation for your nose job, you should stop smoking for two weeks. While cigarettes are filled with a number of harmful chemical compounds, nicotine is particularly dangerous for individuals who will undergo surgery in the near future. One reason nicotine needs to be avoided is that it elevates your blood pressure. Note, you need to stop consuming any products that contain nicotine, including:

Note, you should also avoid other things that will increase your blood pressure, like alcohol consumption and excessive consumption of sodium and caffeine. Also, you need to make sure that you are hydrated when you come in for your appointment. If your urine smells like salt or is dark in color, you need to drink more water. If you don’t like the taste of water, diffuse your favorite fruits in a pitcher of it overnight.

Will I Need To Fast Prior to My Procedure?

Pre-op fasting is only necessary if your procedure will be performed under general anesthesia. Remember, we will advise you on whether you are healthy enough to get general anesthesia during your initial consultation. In addition to your heart, lung, and overall health, we will take into consideration the scope of your procedure.

If you are required to fast before your nose job, drinking dark beverages and eating will be forbidden for eight hours prior to your operation. Also, clear liquids will be forbidden in the 120 minutes prior to your operation. During your initial consultation, we will answer any questions you may have regarding what constitutes a clear or dark beverage.

How Long Will My Recovery Take?

You can generally expect to need a week or two off from work to focus on rest after your procedure. However, individual recovery timelines vary widely based on several factors, including the scope of the procedure and how well one follows the post-op recovery guidelines. For instance, recovery will likely take longer if cartilage is being grafted from your rib or ear to augment your nose.

Also of note, it can take between 10 and 13 months to recover from this procedure fully, especially if cartilage is used to augment the nose. You should also understand that, while you’ll only have to take a handful of days off from work, certain activities will be restricted for several weeks.
