What Is Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when pores become blocked. This often leads to unattractive and sometimes painful pimples. Acne can impact your face, back, chest, neck, shoulders and upper arms.

While acne if often associated with the teenage years, many adults, in their 20s and beyond, suffer from acne. Acne in severe cases leads to scarring.

Laser treatments can help reduce acne scarring and improve the overall health of your skin.

The American Academy of Dermatology offers information on acne and medical terms used to describe the condition:

Lesion: This physical change to body tissue can come from disease or injury. Lesions often are signs not only of acne, but skin cancer as well.

Comedo: This follicle is stuffed with dead cells, small hairs and bacteria. When it opens, the comedo becomes a blackhead. A closed comedo is better known as a whitehead.

Papule: This small lesion forms above the surface of your skin. Groups of small papules feel like sandpaper and are nearly invisible.

Pustule: These lesions are dome-shaped and have pus made of dead skin, white blood cells and bacteria. Pustules can form above follicles and have hairs in the center, but pustules usually don’t cause scarring.

Macule: This is the red spot acne lesions leave behind after they heal. Macules can last for weeks before finally fading away.

Nodule: These dome-shaped lesions are accompanied by inflammation and pain. Because they reach deep layers of your skin, scarring can occur.

Acne does not discriminate between men and women, with both sexes suffering from the skin condition.

Men are more likely to have severe and long-lasting cases of acne. And studies indicate young men are often hesitant to seek professional treatment for acne issues.

Acne in women can be related to hormonal changes. Some cosmetics also can cause flare-ups.

SmoothBeam Laser

At New England Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Center, we offer the SmoothBeam non-invasive rejuvenation laser for the treatment of acne scars and wrinkles. This advanced system remodels the skin by penetrating into the deeper dermis to fill and soften acne scars from the inside out. By stimulating the body’s natural healing response, collagen is replenished in treated areas, resurfacing the skin and gradually reducing the appearance of acne scarring. The underlying sebaceous glands are also heated, effectively targeting acne at the source.

Featuring Cryogen spray cooling, this treatment does not irritate or damage the skin, and is comfortable for most patients.

Why Lasers?

Laser treatments are effective, safe methods to treat acne and scarring that comes with it. Lasers are designed to target the root causes of acne. Treatments are not painful and most patients can return to work or school soon after visits.

Lasers employ energy pulses that travel deep into your skin. That’s what’s needed to reach oil glands and limit their ability to cause acne. Laser treatment won’t affect the oils people need for healthy skin.

In addition, laser treatments give your body the ability to produce collagen that can fill in acne scars. Your skin’s texture will be smoother and even in tone following treatment.

During laser treatment, you may feel a tingling sensation. Pain-prevention techniques are available if your skin is very sensitive.

Laser treatments take minutes to complete. Some patients may require additional treatments for optimum results. Most patients will see acne lesions and scars reduced after a single treatment session.

Don’t let acne keep you in pain or prevent you from enjoying an active social life with friends and family.
