Xeomin
Xeomin is technically called “incobotulinum toxin A.” It is derived from botulinum toxins. It has been approved by the FDA for treating moderate to severe frown lines between the eyes and for treating adults with cervical dystonia or blepharospasm. It can, of course, be used off-label for other uses at the discretion of a doctor.
Dysport
Dysport is technically called “abobotulinum toxin A.” It is also derived from botulinum toxins. Unlike Xeomin, it has other proteins present in the solution. It has been approved by the FDA for treating the same conditions as Xeomin.
Xeomin vs. Dysport
The biggest difference between the two agents is that Xeomin contains nothing but the neurotoxin. Dysport contains protective proteins that are loosely attached to the neurotoxin. Because of this difference, they have different diffusion properties after injection. Dysport diffuses more slowly and for shorter distances than does Xeomin, which means it is easier to precisely target certain lines near sensitive structures (such as the eyes) with Dysport. If either agent diffuses too far near the eyes, temporarily drooping eyelids may occur.
Because Xeomin contains nothing but the purified neurotoxin, some people have suggested it is less likely to cause reactions and allergies. However, others say that the protective proteins wrapped around the neurotoxin in Dysport shield it from the immune system and prevent allergic reactions. Allergic reactions to either preparation are quite rare, so the point might be irrelevant.
Another difference is the dosage. Dysport is provided in a lower concentration than Xeomin, so larger volumes of Dysport need to be injected. Injecting larger volumes may lead to more temporary side effects such as swelling and redness.
