Most Common Reasons for Otoplasty
Prominent Ears – The abnormal measures of the ears exceed proper appearance and distance from the head. The angle is typically distorted and the configuration of both ears may not be symmetrical with each other. Otoplasty sculpts and contours the ears to their proper size and shape.
Trauma – Many patients are recommended for otoplasty because of injuries obtained for various reasons. Different methods of otoplasty may restore the natural appearance of the ears and strengthen their proper function.
Genetic Deformities – Patients with genetic defects may greatly benefit from otoplasty. Unusually large or small ears with missing sections of the cartilage often can be corrected with otoplasty for cosmetic reasons to improve the patient’s appearance and self-esteem.
Candidates for Otoplasty
The procedure can be performed for people of all ages, but it is most commonly done for children. Good pediatric candidates include children who are at least 5 years old as the cartilage is stable enough at that age, and the surgery can be successfully completed. Good adult candidates are those with specific goals in mind who can effectively express their concerns. In both cases, the patient has to exhibit signs of good health without any life-threatening medical conditions.
The Surgery
Prior the surgery, the patient is fully evaluated for drug allergies and previous medical procedures. The process is explained in detail, and the patient is informed of any possible post-surgery complications. Typically, a series of photographs is taken and recorded.
Depending on the severity of the procedure, various types of anesthesia may be administered to assure the patient’s comfort and cooperation during the surgery. The incisions are often made behind the ears and if necessary, within the folds of the pinna (outer ear) to hide any scars. The ultimate goal is to make the ears appear proportionate and natural.
Recovery after the Surgery
In most cases, the results are favorable and meet the patient’s expectations. Post-surgery discomfort is typically controlled with pain medication until full recovery. It is to be expected to have stitches placed to secure the tissue in place of incisions as they assure proper healing and reintegration with the surrounding tissues. In some cases, secondary surgical treatment may be recommended to achieve optimal results.
Results
Almost immediate results are noticeable once the swelling subsides, and the area heals properly. Many patients recover within 2-3 weeks and are able to regain their self-confidence. The scars are often hidden from the view allowing the ears to look naturally and uniform.
Otoplasty is considered to be a cosmetic procedure as it is aimed at improving the patient’s overall look. It does not change the ability to hear or the location of the ears. Although the surgery is invasive, it can create beautiful results for patients of all ages.
