What Are the Differences Between Xeomin, Dysport, and Botox?

Millions of people turn to injectable neuromodulators every year to reduce wrinkles and achieve a more youthful appearance. But with several options available—including Xeomin, Dysport, and Botox—how do you know which one is right for you?

These three treatments might seem identical at first glance, but each has unique characteristics that could make one a better fit for you. Let’s break down what makes each one special and help you understand which might be your perfect match.

What Do These Neuromodulators Have in Common?

Xeomin, Dysport, and Botox all contain botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein that temporarily blocks nerve signals to specific muscles. When these muscles can’t contract, the skin above them smooths out, reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Get to Know Botox: The Household Name

When you think of wrinkle treatments, Botox probably comes to mind first. As the pioneer in cosmetic neuromodulators, Botox has been FDA-approved since 2002 and has treated millions of patients worldwide.

Key Botox Characteristics:

  • Formulation: Contains the active toxin plus complexing proteins that stabilize the molecule
  • Onset time: Results begin to appear in 3-5 days, with full effect at 10-14 days
  • Duration: Typically lasts 3-4 months before touch-ups are needed
  • Best for: Precision treatments where spreading is not desired
  • FDA approvals: Most extensive of the three, including forehead lines, crow’s feet, frown lines, and many medical conditions

Botox works wonderfully for treating specific, targeted areas. If you’re looking for a treatment with the longest track record and most extensive research behind it, Botox might be your choice.

Get to Know Dysport: When Speed and Spread Matter

While Dysport may not have Botox’s name recognition, it offers some distinct advantages that make it the preferred choice for many patients and providers.

Key Dysport Characteristics:

  • Formulation: Smaller protein molecules that diffuse more easily after injection
  • Onset time: Often works faster, with results visible in 1-3 days
  • Duration: Typically lasts 3-4 months
  • Best for: Larger treatment areas like foreheads, where some spreading is beneficial
  • FDA approvals: Primarily for glabellar lines (the “11s” between your eyebrows)

If you’re preparing for an upcoming event and need quick results, or if you want to treat a broader area with fewer injection points, Dysport might be your ideal option.

Get to Know Xeomin: The Pure Approach

Xeomin is the newest of these three neuromodulators and distinguishes itself with its “naked” formulation.

Key Xeomin Characteristics:

  • Formulation: Contains only the pure toxin without additives or complexing proteins
  • Onset time: Results typically begin to appear in 3-4 days, with full effect at 10-14 days
  • Duration: Typically lasts 3-4 months
  • Best for: Patients who have developed resistance to other neuromodulators
  • FDA approvals: Glabellar lines, with off-label use for other areas

Have you tried Botox or Dysport before and found they didn’t work as well over time? You might have developed antibodies to the accessory proteins in those formulations. Xeomin’s pure composition could be the solution, as there are no extra proteins for your body to recognize and fight against.

Which Treatment Is Right for You?

Choosing between Xeomin, Dysport, and Botox depends on several factors unique to you:

Your Treatment History

If you’ve had success with one product, you might want to stick with it. However, if you’ve noticed diminishing results over time, switching to another option (especially Xeomin) might give you better outcomes.

Your Treatment Area

The location and size of the area you want treated matters:

  • Small, precise areas (like crow’s feet): Botox or Xeomin
  • Larger areas (like the forehead): Dysport’s spreading properties may be advantageous
  • Between the brows: All three work well for this common treatment area

Your Timeline

Need results for a weekend wedding or special event? Dysport typically works fastest (1-3 days), while Botox and Xeomin may take a bit longer (3-5 days).

Your Budget

While pricing varies by provider and location, here’s what you should know:

  • Dysport units are dosed differently than Botox and Xeomin (you’ll need more units)
  • The total cost per treatment area often ends up being comparable between all three
  • Some manufacturers offer loyalty programs that can save you money over time

What to Expect During a Neuromodulator Treatment

No matter which neuromodulator you choose, the treatment process is similar:

  • Your provider will discuss your goals and examine your facial muscle movements
  • The treatment area will be cleansed
  • A very fine needle will be used to inject the product precisely where needed
  • The entire process typically takes 10-20 minutes
  • You can return to most normal activities immediately afterward

After your treatment, you’ll need to:

  • Remain upright for 4 hours
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours
  • Avoid massing or applying pressure to the treated area
  • Skip alcohol, blood thinners, and anti-inflammatory medications for 24 hours if possible

What Are the Potential Side Effects of Neuromodulators?

All three treatments have similar safety profiles. Possible side effects include temporary redness or swelling at injection sites, slight bruising and mild headache. In rare cases, patients may experience temporary drooping of an eyelid or eyebrow

These effects are typically mild and short-lived. The best way to minimize risks is to choose an experienced provider who understands facial anatomy and has extensive training with these products.

The Importance of Your Neuormodulator Injector

While the differences between these products matter, your provider’s skill and experience are even more critical to your results. An expert injector like Dr. Lazor will:

  • Understand which product works best for specific areas and concerns
  • Use the proper technique and dosage for natural-looking results
  • Know how to avoid complications and manage any side effects
  • Take time to understand your unique facial structure and aesthetic goals
